About the author

Born on February 24, 1867, in Dycusburg, Kentucky, she grew up in nearby Salem and began teaching while still very young. She studied at the National Normal School in Lebanon, Ohio, and graduated from Southern National University in Huntingdon, Tennessee, in 1891 with a bachelor of science degree.

After returning to Kentucky, she helped organize the first two graded schools in Livingston County and later served as principal of both. She also worked with teachers' institutes, served on the Livingston County Board of Examiners, and became the first woman member of the Paducah Board of Education, a role for which she was long recognized in Kentucky educational history.

Her writing grew out of that same commitment to learning and local memory. Along with Stories of Old Kentucky, published in 1915, she wrote other historical works connected to western Kentucky and Paducah, including pieces on McCracken County, Reelfoot Lake, and Lucy Jefferson Lewis. The result is an author remembered not only for preserving Kentucky's past, but for making it approachable for younger readers and community audiences.
