About the author

Born in Stanford-on-Teme, Worcestershire, in 1781, Lucy Lyttelton Cameron was the daughter of clergyman and poet George Butt and the younger sister of author Mary Martha Sherwood. She received an unusually broad education for the time, studying Latin, French, Italian, and Greek, and was introduced to literary figures including Hannah More and Elizabeth Carter.

She married the Reverend Charles Richard Cameron in 1806 and spent much of her married life supporting parish work and raising a large family in Shropshire and Lincolnshire. Her writing grew from this religious and educational setting, beginning with The History of Margaret Whyte and later expanding into short books and allegories for children, many based on familiar people and events.

Cameron wrote hundreds of works, including The Two Lambs, Emma and Her Nurse, Martin and His Two Sunday Scholars, The Bright Shilling, and The Pink Tippet. She also edited the Nursery and Infants' Schools Magazine from 1831 to 1852, helping shape nineteenth-century children's literature before her death in 1858.
