About the author

Born Margaret Brodie Stewart in 1810, she married Sir John Herschel in 1829 and moved within a circle of major Victorian scientific and literary figures. She is also remembered as a botanical artist, especially for the flower studies she made with her husband during their years in southern Africa.

For readers today, her lasting literary importance comes from her role as "Mrs. John Herschel," the editor of Memoir and Correspondence of Caroline Herschel, published in 1876. That book brought together material on Caroline Herschel's life and letters, helping later generations appreciate Caroline's achievements in astronomy.

Some catalogues identify the author simply as "Mrs. John Herschel, d. 1876." The historical record around that death date is not entirely consistent, so it is safest to say that this is the name under which the book was published and is commonly catalogued.
