About the author

Born Alice Louisa Whiffin in Brighton on October 21, 1866, she grew up in Sussex, a landscape that would become central to her fiction. She later married Henry Dudeney, the writer and creator of mathematical puzzles, and published much of her work under the style Mrs. Henry Dudeney.

She became a successful novelist and short story writer, building a reputation for stories rooted in English provincial life, especially Sussex. Readers and critics of her time often noted the strength of her local settings and the realism of her characters.

She died on November 21, 1945. Today, she is remembered both for her own substantial body of fiction and for the diary and other writings that preserve a personal view of her world.
