Born Louise Frances Story in County Cavan, Ireland, in 1856, she wrote under several forms of her name, most often Mrs. E. M. Field. Her work combined historical interest with a strong focus on children, childhood, and reading.
Her best-known nonfiction book, The Child and His Book: Some Account of the History and Progress of Children’s Literature in England, was first published in 1891. Other works include Bryda: A Story of the Indian Mutiny, Ethne, Little Count Paul, Master Magnus, Bid Me to Live, and Castle Dangerous of Canada. She died around 1940.
