About the author

Born Annie Molyneux on 4 February 1806 in Stanton Lacy, Shropshire, she became known to readers as Mrs. J. B. Webb after marrying John Birch Webb, vicar of Weobley, in 1828. Later in life the family took the surname Webb-Peploe, and she is also listed as Annie Webb-Peploe in modern references.

She was a British writer of roughly twenty-five books. Her work was especially associated with historical and religious fiction, and titles linked to her include Naomi; or, The Last Days of Jerusalem, The Pilgrims of New England, and The Martyrs of Carthage. Much of her fiction places personal stories inside larger moments from biblical, early Christian, or English and colonial history.

She died in 1880, but her books continued to circulate long afterward and some remain available in digital libraries today. That lasting presence suggests the appeal of her writing still lies in its mix of earnest feeling, dramatic history, and clear storytelling.
