Born Emily Tennyson Bradley on October 29, 1862, she was the daughter of George Granville Bradley, the Dean of Westminster, and had Alfred, Lord Tennyson, as her godfather. In 1893, she married Alexander Murray Smith and published under the name Mrs. A. Murray Smith.

She wrote historical works including Life of the Lady Arabella Stuart, Annals of Westminster Abbey, and The Roll-call of Westminster Abbey. She also contributed articles to the Dictionary of National Biography, showing the range of her historical interests and her reputation as a careful researcher.

Her name remained closely linked with Westminster Abbey throughout her life. A memorial stone in the Abbey recognizes her as its historian, reflecting the lasting value of her writing on one of Britain’s most famous historic sites.
