About the author

Born at Costessey Park in Norfolk in 1737, Edward Jerningham was educated in France, including at Douay and in Paris. He later settled in London, where he became known in literary and high-society circles and published poetry and plays.

Jerningham wrote during the second half of the 18th century and was remembered as both a poet and a dramatist. Accounts of his life often note his liberal views and the polished, social character of his career, though he was also sharply mocked by some later satirists.

He died in London on November 17, 1812. Today he is mainly remembered as a minor but distinctive literary figure of his period, connected with the cultural life and manners of Georgian England.
