About the author

Born in Southampton in 1789, Moyle Sherer was a British army officer, traveller, and writer. Sources agree that he attended Winchester College before leaving for a commission in the 34th Regiment of Foot, and that he served in the Peninsular War in Portugal and Spain during the campaigns against Napoleon.

After his military service, he built a writing career from the experiences he had gathered on campaign and abroad. He is especially associated with travel writing and memoir, including Recollections of the Peninsula and A Ramble in Germany, and he also wrote fiction such as The Story of a Life. That mix of firsthand observation and narrative skill gives his work its enduring interest.

Sherer died in 1869. Although he is not among the best-known nineteenth-century authors today, he remains a distinctive voice for readers interested in Regency and early Victorian travel, war, and personal recollection.
