About the author

Born in Suwałki, Poland, in 1820, Moses Margoliouth was educated in Jewish religious learning before moving to England as a young man. He converted to Christianity in 1838, later studied at Trinity College Dublin, and was ordained in the Church of England.

Margoliouth wrote widely on Jewish history, biblical subjects, and Christian-Jewish debate. His best-known works include The Jews in Great Britain and History of the Jews in Great Britain, and he also published travel writing based on a visit to the Holy Land.

Remembered as a scholar, minister, and controversial religious figure, he occupied an unusual place in 19th-century British intellectual life. His writings reflect both his strong opinions and his broad learning, and they remain of interest to readers studying Victorian religion, Jewish history, and conversion narratives.
