About the author

Born in Port Adelaide, South Australia, in 1855, Mortimer Luddington Menpes later moved to London, where he studied art and began exhibiting at the Royal Academy. He became known as a painter, printmaker, illustrator, and author, building a wide-ranging career that linked the art world with popular illustrated books.

Menpes is often remembered for his association with James McNeill Whistler and for the strong influence Japanese art and design had on his work. He also traveled widely, and those journeys fed into many of the books and images for which he became well known, including richly illustrated volumes about countries and cities he visited.

For audiobook listeners, Menpes is especially interesting as a writer who brought an artist’s eye to the page. His books were shaped by close observation and a taste for atmosphere, making them appealing records of travel, culture, and everyday life from the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
