About the author

Born in Australia in 1855, Mortimer Menpes moved to London as a young man to study art and went on to become a successful painter, etcher, illustrator, and author. He was associated with James McNeill Whistler early in his career, and he developed a reputation for stylish portraits, interiors, and scenes from everyday life as well as for his skill in printmaking.

Menpes also became widely known for turning travel into art and books. He visited countries including Japan, India, China, Burma, Egypt, and Mexico, gathering material that he later published in richly illustrated volumes that helped bring distant places vividly before British readers.

He died in 1938, leaving behind a body of work that crosses painting, printmaking, and popular travel writing. Today he is remembered not only for his pictures, but for the way he combined image and narrative to make art feel immediate and accessible to a broad audience.
