Born Morgan Scott Peck in New York City in 1936, M. Scott Peck trained first at Harvard and then at Case Western Reserve University, going on to work as a psychiatrist in both the U.S. Army and private practice. His writing grew out of that clinical experience and aimed to explore how emotional life, personal growth, and spiritual questions overlap.
His breakthrough book, The Road Less Traveled (1978), became an international bestseller and made him one of the most widely read voices in popular psychology. He later wrote other notable books, including People of the Lie and The Different Drum, often returning to themes of discipline, community, love, and moral responsibility.
Peck died in 2005, but his work has remained in print and continues to attract readers looking for thoughtful, accessible writing about the hard work of becoming fully human.
