About the author
Monica Maria Stanley (1879–July 25, 1972) was a British teacher from Marple, Cheshire. She trained in domestic science at Battersea Polytechnic and later worked as a domestic-science teacher.
In 1915, she took leave from teaching to join the Women’s Imperial Service League and help establish the Stobart Field Hospital in Kragujevac, Serbia. Serving as the hospital’s head cook, she witnessed the challenges faced by women volunteers working near the Balkan front during World War I.
Her experiences were published in My Diary in Serbia: April 1, 1915–Nov. 1, 1915, an important firsthand account of the field hospital and wartime volunteer work. Stanley married Leon Daviel in 1927 and died in London on July 25, 1972.
