About the author

Born Monica Maria Stanley in 1879, she was a British teacher who later became known for her wartime memoir My Diary in Serbia. During World War I, she served as head cook with the Stobart Field Hospital in Serbia, an experience that placed her close to the daily realities of relief work in a war zone.

Her diary, covering April 1 to November 1, 1915, was published in 1916. It stands out for its direct, personal view of life in Serbia during the war, showing not just the danger and disruption of the time, but also the endurance and commitment of the people trying to help.

Stanley died on July 25, 1972. Today, her work remains valuable to readers interested in World War I, women’s voices in history, and memoirs that bring major events down to a human scale.
