About the author

Born in 1819 in the Philippines, Modesto de Castro became a Roman Catholic priest and one of the most important early writers in Tagalog prose. He is often remembered as a foundational figure in the development of written Tagalog because his style was direct, elegant, and easy for ordinary readers to follow.

He is best known for devotional and moral works, especially Urbana at Felisa, a guide to proper conduct presented in an engaging literary form. His writing blended religious instruction with practical advice, helping make literature in Tagalog more widely read during the nineteenth century.

De Castro died in 1864, but his influence continued long after his lifetime. In Philippine literary history, he is still associated with the growth of prose in the national tradition and with a kind of writing that aimed to teach, guide, and speak plainly to everyday people.
