by Mme. de Stolz
Madame de Stolz was the pen name of Marie Françoise Josèphe Bégon de Larouzière, also known as Fanny de Bégon. She was born on January 1, 1820, in Lorient, France, and died on April 29, 1892, in Paris.
She began publishing in the mid-19th century and is especially associated with writing for children and young people. Sources agree that she contributed to the Journal des jeunes personnes, and over the course of her career she produced more than 100 works, helping make her a familiar name in French popular literature of the period.
Her books were written for a broad readership and often combined entertainment with clear lessons and strong feeling, which helped them travel well beyond their first publication context. Today, she is remembered as a productive and widely read French woman writer whose work formed part of the everyday reading world of the 1800s.
