Born in Northumberland County, Virginia, in 1906, she spent her life deeply connected to the Northern Neck. Available biographical sources describe her as an author, artist, and teacher, and note that she died in Reedville, Virginia, in 2006 at the age of 99.
She is best known for The Stronghold: A Story of Historic Northern Neck of Virginia and Its People, first published in 1959. The book became a lasting regional classic, and later editions and reprints have continued to introduce readers to her vivid, accessible way of telling local history.
