A major voice in Catalan poetry, he turned the landscapes and classical spirit of Mallorca into memorable verse. Best known for "El pi de Formentor," he is also remembered as an important figure of the Mallorca School.

by Miquel Costa i Llobera
Born in Pollença, Mallorca, on March 10, 1854, he became one of the most respected poets writing in Catalan. Sources consistently describe him as a poet, translator, prose writer, and orator, and they place him among the key figures in modern Catalan poetry.
His work is closely tied to Mallorca’s landscape and to a strong classical influence. He is especially associated with "El pi de Formentor" and with the collection Poesies (1885), while later accounts also note his importance within the so-called Mallorca School.
Costa i Llobera was also a priest, and his writing is often described as balancing lyrical feeling, formal control, and a deep cultural sense of place. He died in Palma de Mallorca on October 16, 1922, but his work remains central to the Catalan literary tradition.
