About the author

Born in Paisley in 1878, Minna Galbraith Cowan was educated in Hendon and Glasgow, studied at Girton College, Cambridge, and later completed a social science diploma at the University of Edinburgh. She became known not only as a writer but also as a public figure deeply involved in education and civic life.

She visited India in 1914 to study the conditions of women there, and this research informed The Education of the Women of India. During World War I she served in the Women’s Royal Naval Service, and in later public roles she worked on education policy in Edinburgh, including efforts to improve school meals, play centers, and class sizes.

Cowan was also active in politics and was awarded an OBE. She died in 1951. A suitable verified portrait image could not be confirmed from the sources I checked, so no profile image is included.
