About the author

Born in Rochester, New York, on January 7, 1837, Minerva Brace Norton grew up largely in Janesville, Wisconsin, after her family moved west. She studied in Wisconsin and graduated from Baraboo Seminary in 1861, building the strong academic background that shaped her later work as both a teacher and writer.

After marrying the Rev. Smith Norton in 1867, she spent much of her life combining domestic and church responsibilities with teaching and literary work. She taught at the College for Women in Evanston, Illinois, and later served as principal of the ladies' department at Ripon College. Contemporary accounts describe her as a steady contributor to periodicals from an early age through the end of her life.

Norton also published books, including In and Around Berlin, a travel work, and A True Teacher: Mary Mortimer, a Memoir. She is remembered as an educator who wrote with intelligence and purpose, and as part of the circle of 19th-century American women who helped shape literary and religious culture through essays, biography, and public-minded writing.
