About the author

Born on August 5, 1829, in Le Roy, New York, he moved to Goshen, Indiana, as a teenager and studied law before building a public career. He served in the Indiana Senate and became known as a lawyer and civic leader before the Civil War changed the course of his life.

During the war, he served as a Union Army officer and rose to the rank of brigadier general. He took part in major western campaigns, including Stones River and Chickamauga, and became associated with the hard fighting of the Army of the Cumberland.

After the war, he settled in Chicago, where he worked in banking and real estate. He died on August 30, 1904, leaving behind a career that linked politics, war, and business in 19th-century America.
