1829–1904
Best known for a vivid firsthand account of the Battle of Stones River, this Union general later worked in banking and real estate, bringing a practical, on-the-ground eye to his writing.

by Milo S. Hascall
Born in Le Roy, New York, in 1829, Milo S. Hascall grew up in Indiana and graduated from West Point in 1852. He served in the U.S. Army, then became a lawyer before returning to military service during the Civil War, where he rose to the rank of brigadier general.
Hascall is remembered today less for a large body of books than for a sharply observed memoir, Personal Recollections and Experiences Concerning the Battle of Stone River. That work draws on his direct experience in one of the war's hardest-fought campaigns and gives readers a close, personal view of the conflict.
After the war, he moved into civilian business, working in banking and later in real estate in Chicago. He died in 1904, leaving behind a life that crossed military service, public life, and historical remembrance.
