About the author

Born in the Austro-Hungarian Empire, Milivoy Stoyan Stanoyevich was educated at the University of Belgrade and began his career as a teacher before political trouble pushed him into exile. He later continued his studies in Europe and then in the United States, where he pursued advanced work in literature at Columbia University and the University of California, Berkeley.

In America, he became known as a professor, essayist, and interpreter of Slavic culture. He lectured on Slavonic literature, worked in San Francisco as an adviser on Slavic affairs connected with the Imperial Russian consulate, and went on to write and edit widely. His books and articles explored Tolstoy, Serbian poetry, and the histories and cultures of the Slavonic nations, bringing a broad international perspective to readers in English.

Stanoyevich also contributed to major periodicals and reference works and was noted for a style described as clear, vigorous, and direct. Although some readily available sources disagree about exact life dates, they consistently present him as an important Serbian-American man of letters whose career linked scholarship, journalism, and cultural advocacy.
