About the author

Born Stella Maria Sarah Miles Franklin in New South Wales in 1879, she grew up in the Australian bush, an experience that deeply shaped her writing. Her breakout novel, My Brilliant Career, was published in 1901 and became a landmark in Australian literature for its vivid voice and refusal to fit neatly into expectations about women’s lives.

Franklin lived and worked in Australia, the United States, and England, and remained committed to feminist and nationalist causes as well as to literature. Although she wrote across her life, another major success came later with All That Swagger in 1936, helping secure her reputation as one of Australia’s important novelists.

She died in 1954, but her influence only grew. Her name lives on through the Miles Franklin Literary Award, one of Australia’s best-known prizes for fiction, created from her estate to support and celebrate Australian writing.
