About the author

Margaret Fairless Barber (1869–1901), who wrote as Michael Fairless, was an English Christian writer born in Rastrick, Yorkshire. She is remembered chiefly for The Roadmender, a meditative work published in 1902 after her death, which became especially popular with early 20th-century readers.

She lived with serious health problems, including a long-term spinal condition, and later struggled with failing sight. Those limitations shaped a life centered on reading, reflection, and writing, and they help explain the calm, inward-looking tone that runs through her work.

Barber also wrote The Gathering of Brother Hilarius and The Grey Brethren. Though her career was brief, her writing continued to attract readers for its blend of devotion, landscape, and quiet wisdom.
