About the author

Born in Massachusetts in the 1870s and remembered today as Michael Earls, S.J., he was an American Jesuit priest who also built a wide-ranging literary career. He wrote poetry, fiction, essays, and criticism, and he was closely connected with Catholic education for much of his life.

Earls studied at Holy Cross and Georgetown, entered the Jesuits in 1899, and was ordained in 1912. Alongside his religious vocation, he taught and held academic leadership roles, becoming known as a cultivated speaker and man of letters as well as a priest.

His books include novels such as The Parish and the Hill and works of literary reflection like Manuscripts and Memories. Some catalogs list his birth year as 1873, while other biographical sources give 1875, so the exact year is not fully consistent across records; he died in 1937.
