About the author

Menco Stern (1855–1935) was a German-language teacher based in New York and Brooklyn. Contemporary directories identify him as a teacher, and archival records note that he taught at Stern’s School of Languages in New York City.

He wrote German-language teaching books including Geschichten vom Rhein, Geschichten von deutschen Städten, and Aus deutschen Dörfern. These readers used stories about German landscapes, cities, traditions, and folklore to support conversation, composition, and the study of German classics. Stern also collaborated with Sigmon M.
