Melesina Chenevix St. George Trench

1768–1827

An Irish writer, poet, and diarist, she left behind journals and letters that give a vivid, personal glimpse of late 18th- and early 19th-century life. Her work drew wider notice after her son Richard Chenevix Trench published selections from her papers after her death.

About the author

Born in Dublin on March 22, 1768, she was orphaned young and raised within a prominent Irish family. She first married Colonel Richard St George, and later married Richard Trench, taking the name by which she is now best known.

She wrote poetry, journals, letters, and other prose, and is especially remembered for her diaries. Although admired in her own lifetime, her writing became better known after her son edited and published selections from her journals and papers in the 1860s.

Today she is remembered as part of the rich tradition of Irish women’s life writing: a sharp observer whose private reflections outlasted the social fame of her day.
