About the author

Born on June 28, 1810, in Ehringen near Nördlingen, Melchior Meyr grew up in Bavaria and went on to study philosophy and law in Munich and Heidelberg. He became known as a poet, novelist, and philosopher, building a literary life shaped by both reflective ideas and close attention to ordinary people.

Meyr's best-known work is Erzählungen aus dem Ries (Stories from the Ries), a collection admired for its lively, affectionate picture of peasant life in his home region. Alongside fiction, he also wrote poetry, tragedies, and philosophical works, showing a range that moved between storytelling and serious thought.

He died in Munich on April 22, 1871. Though he is not as widely read today as some of his contemporaries, he remains an appealing figure for readers interested in German regional literature and in writers who treated local life with real care and humanity.
