About the author

George Harmon Coxe was an American crime writer born in Olean, New York, in 1901 and active for decades as a novelist and short-story writer. He studied at Purdue and Cornell, worked in journalism and advertising, and became known for brisk, readable mysteries with a strong sense of pace.

He created several recurring detectives, but many readers know him best for characters linked to the world of crime reporting and photography, including Flashgun Casey and Kent Murdock. Max Hale was one of his other series characters, appearing in Murder for the Asking and The Lady Is Afraid.

Coxe wrote more than 60 novels over the course of his career, and his standing in the genre was recognized when Mystery Writers of America named him a Grand Master in 1964. He died in 1984, but his work still appeals to readers who enjoy classic American mystery fiction with clean, direct storytelling.
