About the author

Born in Warsaw on September 22, 1823, Maurycy Karasowski was a Polish cellist, composer, and music writer. He studied music in Warsaw, including cello with W. Kratzer and harmony with A. Freyer, and later worked in the Warsaw theater orchestra.

In 1864 he moved to Dresden, where he joined the court opera orchestra and was later named a court musician. Alongside performing, he wrote about music and built a reputation as a thoughtful critic and author.

Karasowski is especially known for his writings on Frédéric Chopin, including a major biography that helped introduce Chopin’s life and legacy to later readers. He died in Dresden on April 20, 1892.
