About the author

Born in London in 1859, Maurice Henry Harris moved to the United States as a child and later studied at Columbia University, where he earned degrees including a Ph.D. He was also ordained through the Emanu-El Theological Seminary in New York, combining academic training with religious leadership.

Harris became rabbi of Temple Israel of Harlem in 1882 and remained closely identified with the congregation for almost fifty years. Alongside his work in the pulpit, he wrote and edited books on Jewish history, biblical literature, and Jewish thought, helping make those subjects accessible to students and general readers.

Today he is remembered both as a long-serving American rabbi and as a prolific author whose work connected scholarship, faith, and public education.
