About the author

Born in 1848, Mauno Rosendal was a Finnish educator and author who studied for a degree in philosophy, qualified as a teacher, and worked in Oulu as a schoolteacher and later a headmaster. Alongside his teaching career, he was active as a writer and editor, building a reputation for making history readable and engaging.

Rosendal wrote historical novels, biographies, and nonfiction, with much of his work connected to Finnish history and national life. He is especially associated with popular historical writing that introduced well-known figures and events to general readers rather than only to specialists.

He died in 1917. Today he is remembered as one of the writers who helped shape historical reading in Finnish at a time when education, publishing, and national culture were all growing quickly.
