About the author

Born in 1640 and dying in 1691, Mattias (or Matthias) Salamnius was a Finnish Lutheran minister as well as a poet. He is chiefly known for Ilo-Laulu Jesuxesta (1690), a long poem on the life of Christ.

Modern scholarship describes that work as the first long literary poem written in the traditional unrhymed Finnish runo-song metre, often called Kalevala metre, and intended for broad popular use. Researchers have also noted its lasting importance in early modern Finnish literature and its influence on later oral tradition.

That combination of learned religious writing and native poetic form helps explain why Salamnius still stands out today: he wrote from within the church, but in a style that connected strongly with Finnish vernacular culture.
