by Matti Aikio
Born in 1872 in Karasjok in Finnmark, Matti Aikio was a Norwegian Sámi author and teacher. He wrote in Norwegian and became known for fiction that drew on life in the far north, especially Sámi communities, reindeer-herding culture, and the natural world around him.
Aikio worked as a teacher before establishing himself as a writer. His best-known books include I dyreskind and Bygden på Elvenesset, and his work helped introduce many readers to settings and experiences that were rarely centered in mainstream Scandinavian literature of his time.
He died in 1929. Today he is remembered as an important early Sámi literary voice and as a writer who connected local northern life with a broader reading public.
