About the author

Born in New York City in 1857, he studied for a time in France and Germany before turning to writing and criticism. He became known as an author, drama critic, and editor during the boom years of American popular magazines.

White is especially remembered for his long connection with Argosy, where he served as editor for decades, helping guide one of the most influential early pulp magazines. He also wrote fiction himself, including adventure and boys' stories such as Two Boys and a Fortune and Harry Ascott Abroad.

He died in 1940. Today, he is of interest both as a novelist and as a figure in the growth of mass-market magazine fiction in the United States.
