by Matteo Cuomo
Matteo Cuomo was born in Eboli, Italy, on August 2, 1878. After attending high school in Salerno, he chose the priesthood, studied theology, taught at the seminary in Muro in the province of Potenza during his subdiaconate, and took his vows in 1901.
That same year he was sent to the parish of Sant’Eustachio e San Biagio in Eboli. Alongside his pastoral work, he also pursued a productive literary life.
He is especially remembered for Nel mondo dei libri: bizzarrie, published in 1912. The book is noted for its irony, lively style, and affectionate, observant portraits of different kinds of books and readers, giving his writing a charm that still feels fresh.
