A 19th-century French anatomist and histologist, he helped make complex ideas about the body and embryology easier to study and teach. His work also reached beyond medicine into popular science and artistic anatomy.
Born in Grasse, France, on February 7, 1844, Mathias-Marie Duval became a respected professor of anatomy and histology. He was the son of botanist Joseph Duval-Jouve, and his own career centered on careful scientific teaching and research.
Duval is especially associated with anatomy, histology, and embryology. He taught in Paris and wrote works that helped explain the structure and development of the body, contributing to medical education in late 19th-century France.
He also wrote for broader audiences, including books on Darwinism and artistic anatomy, showing an interest in making science accessible across fields. He died in Paris on February 28, 1907.
