About the author

Writing as Mary Marck, Kersti Bergroth created school stories for girls that became well known in Finland, including Evas klass / Eevan luokka. She was born in Viipuri on January 24, 1886, and died in Helsinki on January 24, 1975. Sources found during research identify Mary Marck as one of Bergroth’s pseudonyms rather than a separate author.

Bergroth’s career was unusually long and wide-ranging. In addition to youth fiction, she wrote plays, books, columns, and translations, and sources note that she first wrote in Swedish before moving into Finnish as well. She is especially remembered today for works such as Anu ja Mikko and for the energy and observation she brought to young people’s everyday lives.

For readers coming to Mary Marck through the school novels, part of the appeal is how warmly and clearly those books capture classroom life, friendships, and growing up. The name belongs to a writer whose body of work stretched across decades and genres, but whose stories for younger readers still give a vivid sense of character and community.
