About the author

Born in New York City in 1831, Mary Mapes Dodge became one of the best-known American writers for children. She is most closely associated with Hans Brinker; or, The Silver Skates (1865), a story set in the Netherlands that remained popular for decades and became a lasting favorite in children's literature.

Dodge was also an influential editor. In 1873 she became the first editor of St. Nicholas Magazine, a landmark children's magazine that published work by many leading authors and helped set a high standard for writing for young readers. Her mix of storytelling, literary quality, and respect for children's intelligence made her a major figure in the field.

Beyond her most famous book, she wrote poems, stories, and essays, building a career that joined creativity with editorial leadership. Today she is remembered not only for a single classic, but for helping define what children's publishing could be in the United States.
