About the author

Mary H. Herbert, also published as Mary E. Herbert, is an American fantasy author born in Ohio in 1957. She grew up in Troy, Ohio, where she was drawn to history, horseback riding, and fantasy books from an early age. One of her first complete science-fiction/fantasy stories won a prize in high school, an early sign that writing would stick with her.

She studied at the University of Montana, the University of Wyoming, and the Centre for Medieval and Renaissance Studies in Oxford. Her first novel, Dark Horse, was published in 1990, and she went on to build a career writing fantasy novels including the Dark Horse series as well as several books connected to the Dragonlance setting.

Readers often remember her work for its strong sense of adventure and its bond between people, magic, and animals. Confirmed public sources also credit her with living in the Atlanta area with her family during part of her writing career.
