About the author

Mary H. Herbert, born Mary Houser Herbert in 1957, is an American fantasy author. She grew up in Troy, Ohio, loved history and riding, and began writing fantasy and science fiction early; one of her school stories even won a writing contest.

She studied at the University of Montana, the University of Wyoming, and the Center for Medieval and Renaissance Studies in Oxford, England. Her first novel, Dark Horse, was published in 1990, launching a series remembered for its magical horses, the Hunnuli.

Along with the Dark Horse books, she wrote several novels set in the Dragonlance world, including Legacy of Steel, The Clandestine Circle, Dragon's Bluff, and the Linsha trilogy. She also contributed short fiction to Forgotten Realms anthologies, making her a familiar name to readers of 1990s and early 2000s fantasy tie-in fiction.
