Born in Tennessee in 1852, Mary Eliza Hanshew later became an American-born British author. She wrote under the name Mary E. Hanshew and is now chiefly associated with the detective and mystery fiction she produced in the early 1900s.
She collaborated closely with her husband, Thomas W. Hanshew, on a number of novels and stories, including books in the Hamilton Cleek series. Those stories helped build the reputation of Cleek, a flamboyant detective figure who became the couple's best-known creation.
Some details of her career have been confused in later reference works, so the surviving record is a little uneven. Even so, sources agree that she continued to be linked with the Hanshew mystery tradition, and her work remains readable today through public-domain editions and audiobook archives.
