About the author

Mary Clark was an American writer associated with The Early Life of Washington, a book published in 1838 and described as being designed for the instruction and amusement of the young.

Very little biographical information about her was easy to confirm, but library and public-domain records identify her as Mary Clark (1792?–1841). That suggests she belonged to the generation writing for young American readers in the early nineteenth century, when short moral and historical works were a common way to teach children about national figures.

Because so few reliable details are readily available, her reputation today rests mainly on that Washington volume. Even so, the book shows an interest in making history accessible to younger audiences and preserving stories about the country's founding era.
