by Mary Blake
Born in Dungarvan, Ireland, in 1840, she moved to the United States as a child when her family settled in Massachusetts. She later became known as an American writer whose work appeared in both poetry and prose.
Her best-known books include Poems (1882) and Mexico, Picturesque, Political, Progressive (1888). That mix of subjects suggests a writer comfortable with both intimate, musical language and a broader view of places and public life.
She died in 1907. Although not widely read today, her work still offers a glimpse of a 19th-century literary career shaped by migration, observation, and a strong poetic sensibility.
