About the author

Born in Dungarvan, Ireland, in 1840, she emigrated to the United States as a child and grew up in Massachusetts. After studying in Quincy, Boston, and Manhattanville, she worked as a teacher before turning more fully to writing.

She published poetry, essays, and stories in well-known periodicals and newspapers, and she also brought out books of verse and fiction. Marriage and family life did not end her literary career; instead, she continued writing while raising a large family in the Boston area.

Remembered as Mary Elizabeth Blake, she was part of Boston's literary world in the late 19th century and left behind a body of work that joined sentiment, polish, and steady craftsmanship. She died in Boston in 1907.
