Born in 1899 and active across much of the 20th century, Martti Haavio was a Finnish poet, scholar, and expert on folklore. He is especially remembered for his work on Finno-Ugric mythology and folk poetry, as well as for writing literary works under the pen name P. Mustapää.
Alongside his writing, he worked closely with Finland’s folk tradition archives and research world. His studies explored old beliefs, runo singers, and mythic themes, helping preserve material that might otherwise have been lost.
His career joined scholarship and imagination in a way that still feels distinctive: he could write as a careful researcher and as a creative author deeply inspired by the same world of legend, song, and symbol.
