About the author

Born in Toronto, Martin Hunter studied at the University of Toronto and went on to follow an unusually varied career. Publisher and bookseller biographies describe him as a director and playwright who also wrote for magazines and produced programs for CBC Radio.

Archive records at the University of Toronto show that he wrote numerous radio plays, including works produced by the CBC such as Signor Butterfly, Allies, Johnny Bananas, La Bolduc, Lives of Girls and Women, The Heart Laid Bare, Bangkok Blues, and Laurier. He also served as artistic director of Hart House Theatre in the 1970s, a role that placed him at the center of an important creative community.

His later books form a memoir sequence that reflects on theatre, travel, media, and Canadian public life. Information from ECW Press and All Lit Up presents him as a writer interested not only in performance and storytelling, but also in the wider world around him; he was also active in philanthropy, serving as president of the K.M. Hunter Charitable Foundation in Toronto.
