Born in London in 1843, Martin Andrew Sharp Hume became known as an English historian, journalist, and specialist in Spanish history. He lived for long periods in Spain, and that direct familiarity with the country shaped much of his writing.
Hume is best remembered for books on Spain and Tudor-Stuart Europe, including studies of Philip II, the Spanish people, and the Spanish Armada. He also worked with historical records as editor of the Calendar of Letters and State Papers Relating to English Affairs, Preserved Principally in the Archives of Simancas, helping make important archival material more accessible to researchers.
His writing is often valued for being energetic and readable as well as deeply informed by Spanish sources. He died in 1910, leaving behind a body of work that connected English readers with the politics, personalities, and power struggles of early modern Spain.
