About the author

Born in London in 1843, Martin Andrew Sharp Hume was originally named Martin Andrew Sharp and later took the surname Hume. He developed an early knowledge of Spanish and spent much of his life connected with Spain, which shaped the direction of his historical writing.

Hume worked as a journalist, editor, and historian, and became especially known for writing on Spain and Tudor England. He also edited calendars of Spanish state papers in the Public Record Office, work that drew directly on archival sources and strengthened his reputation as a serious historian.

His books include studies of Philip II, the Spanish people, and several figures from English royal history, including the wives of Henry VIII and Mary, Queen of Scots. He died in 1910, leaving behind a body of work that linked English and Spanish history in a way that was unusually vivid for general readers of his time.
