Born in 1847, Martin Andrew Sharp Hume was a British historian, biographer, and translator whose work focused especially on Spanish history and Anglo-Spanish relations. He wrote widely on the Tudor period and on the Spanish court, with books including The Courtships of Queen Elizabeth, The Love Affairs of Mary Queen of Scots, Spanish Influence on English Literature, and Queens of Old Spain.
He was also closely connected with archival research, serving as editor of the Calendar of Spanish State Papers in the Public Record Office. That work helped make important documents from the reign of Elizabeth I and other periods more accessible to researchers and general readers alike.
Hume died in 1910, but his reputation has lasted as that of a lively popular historian who combined storytelling with serious interest in original sources. For listeners drawn to royal intrigue, diplomacy, and the shared history of Britain and Spain, his work still offers a rich window into the past.
