Born on July 30, 1842, Martin Alonzo Haynes was an American editor, publisher, and public figure from New Hampshire. He served in the Union Army during the Civil War, and that experience later shaped his writing, including a history of the famous 2nd New Hampshire Regiment.

After the war, he built a career in journalism and publishing, becoming closely associated with newspapers in New Hampshire. His background in the press helped define his public voice: direct, practical, and rooted in local and national affairs.

Haynes also entered politics and went on to serve as a U.S. Representative from New Hampshire. He died on November 28, 1919, leaving behind a life that connected military memory, newspaper work, and public service.
