About the author

Born in Camborne, Cornwall, in 1842, Mark Guy Pearse became a Wesleyan Methodist minister, preacher, lecturer, and prolific author. Contemporary and later reference sources describe him as a well-known public figure across Britain and beyond in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, with a reputation built on lively speaking and accessible religious writing.

Pearse’s books often drew on Methodist faith, practical devotion, and the people and places of Cornwall. He wrote widely for general readers as well as religious audiences, and his popularity was strong enough that libraries and bibliographies still preserve a long list of his works.

He died on January 1, 1930. Although he is less widely read now than he was in his lifetime, he remains an interesting figure for listeners drawn to Victorian religious writing, Cornish history, and authors who once had an enormous popular audience.
