About the author

Marion Johnstone Ford (1848–1907) contributed the second half of Life in the Confederate Army, published by the Neale Publishing Company in 1905. Her portion, titled Some Experiences and Sketches of Southern Life, includes personal narratives and sketches such as “Kent—A War-Time Negro,” “Rose Blankets,” “Some Letters Written During the Last Months of the War,” and “Tay.”

The book identifies her portrait as “Marion Johnstone Porcher,” connecting her with a prominent South Carolina family name. Through family memories, wartime stories, and observations of Southern society, Ford created a record of domestic life and personal experience alongside her husband Arthur P. Ford’s account of Confederate military service.
